NHS staff in the region are being invited to apply for a share of a new Development Fund totalling £250,000 to progress innovative ideas that will deliver improved benefits to patients.
The fund, managed by Health Enterprise East (HEE), the region’s NHS innovation hub based at Papworth Hospital, is to provide financial support to the inventors and their Trusts for new medical devices, technologies and certain types of services that need developing before commercialisation.
HEE is looking for innovations that address a clear unmet clinical or market need. These can come from the whole spectrum of clinical disciplines covered by acute, primary, mental health and ambulance trusts. The funding can be used to progress the idea in a number of ways including: manufacture of prototypes, technical or market feasibility studies, obtaining regulatory affairs advice or writing a business plan.
Dr. Anne Blackwood, Head of Innovation at HEE, said: “Our recently-launched Development Fund provides a stepping stone for ideas before the commercialisation process can begin. Many innovations never get beyond the concept stage because money is not available to progress them. From the Fund, we can award up to £30,000 per project, payable to cover eligible costs approved by the Project Review Committee.”
