New devices to improve diagnosis and treatment of certain conditions, equipment to increase hospital hygiene levels and fresh approaches to medical practices are some of the innovations which have come out of the East of England's NHS Trusts in the last year which will benefit patients. Staff at Health Enterprise East (HEE), the regional NHS innovation hub, based at Papworth Hospital, are celebrating their second anniversary with the announcement of a whole range of products and services which started out as ideas and have now become reality. Over the previous 12 months, HEE has handled 65 innovations coming out of the NHS, comprising both products and service delivery improvements. Of these 20 are being developed and a further 17 evaluated. Already in commercial production and enjoying sales are the Danrik Wedge (a cushion specially designed to help with cervical smear tests), MAX (a multimedia campaign to demonstrate the best practice method of handwashing) and the Burn-bin Cabinet (for the disposal of used needles). Currently being developed and close to launch are the Soft Tissue Biopsy Device (designed to take a sample of tissue more easily and quickly) and an Ear Scaffold to help correct prominent ears without invasive surgery. Alan Barrell, Chairman of HEE said: "HEE's second anniversary is a real cause for celebration. In the last year, we have seen some very exciting innovations come out of ideas for new products or service improvements, all of which will benefit patients. "Our annual Innovation Competition is also going from strength to strength. This year we received 110 entries from 41 of the region's Trusts". |
