A cartoon animation promoting and reinforcing the importance of proper hand- hygiene for healthcare workers, patients and visitors is being rolled out in NHS Trusts, GP practices, PCT’s, schools and care homes across the UK.
The method of hand hygiene demonstrated is being used as a tool to promote hand hygiene compliance by educating and reinforcing this important practice and helping reduce the transmission of communicable diseases including hospital-acquired infections caused by MRSA, E.coli 0154 and C.difficle.
The multi-media campaign uses an animated character - MAX™ - to grab people’s attention and empower everyone to clean their hands regularly throughout the day. This resource, together with the other tools available such as posters, badges and stickers is being used to help change behaviour and promote hand hygiene compliance as an animation on a screensaver throughout hospital PCs and via DVD for TV use. MAX™ badges, which encourage patients to challenge staff over hand hygiene, are also available for staff to wear.
The concept came from a partnership between Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundations Trust, Vis-IT Ltd., a visual engineering company based in Basildon and Health Enterprise East (HEE), the region’s NHS innovation organisation. Working with Infection Control and Communication teams, Vis-IT Ltd developed the animation using its expertise in visual training materials to help reduce the spread of infection throughout healthcare settings and the community.
