Winner of the Alere Award for Medical Technology was Consultant Radiologist Dr John Cockburn from Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for his Aura Device for increasing needle visibility in ultrasound, a simple, inexpensive, sterile and disposable item.
Mathys Squire Award for Software

The Mathys Squire Award for Software was won by Consultant Radiologist Dr Martin Crowe from The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Trust for a software program called StageCRAFT which is a faster and more consistent way to carry out cancer staging, enabling prognosis to be determined and the most appropriate treatment identified.
Award for Patient Safety

In the Patient Safety category, first prize was won by Mr Adam Howard and Dr Oweikumo Eradiri and their team from Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust for the Electronic Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) risk assessment tool and VTE Champions Programme to improve patient safety.
This new electronic tool, which is available through the Hospital’s intranet, is accurate and quick - 15 seconds per patient - with results recorded on a central database for use by doctors, nurses and pharmacists. The new tool and Champions Programme could improve patient safety significantly and prevent VTE which is currently responsible for over 25,000 deaths a year in the UK.
Award for Moving Care Closer to Home

Moving Care Closer to Home was won by Dr Linda Pearce and her team from West Suffolk Hospital NHS Trust who put forward a way to avoid hospital admissions for people suffering from symptoms caused by Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This involves collaborative working between Suffolk COPD Services and East of England Ambulance Service to provide support for patients in their own homes which will result in a reduction of inappropriate hospital admissions.
Award for Tackling Inequalities

In the Tackling Inequalities category, the NHS East of England Award was won by Robert Nesbitt and his team at Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust for ‘Respect for Dementia’, a series of materials, including diaries and a DVD, drawing on the life stories of local people affected by dementia with the aim of increasing understanding and respect for the condition.
Special AwardA special award for the Trust submitting the highest number of entries was won by NHS North East Essex. It was collected by Victoria Raffell, Innovation Scout at the Trust
All first prize winners won a specially engraved trophy together with a cheque for £2,000 to progress their idea.
