These
cabinets can be installed in needle exchange centres, pharmacies, primary care
trusts, hospitals, A&E departments, GP surgeries, dentists, public toilets
and bars & clubs or anywhere that would benefit from the safe and secure
disposal of used hypodermic needles, syringes and related paraphernalia.
They
are strong, free standing, steel cabinets with casters for easy positioning.
The cabinets can be wall or floor anchored making them ideal for location in
unsupervised areas thus allowing users to remain anonymous. In trials, against manned needle exchanged
stations these cabinets collected 5 times more needles. The cabinet has a total capacity of 44 litres
split between 2 compartments each housing a HSE approved sharps bin. Each
compartment has its own unique, one-way, non-retrieval disposal slot. The sharps bins can be easily replaced by
authorised staff opening the full length, rear door which is multiply locked to
enhance security.
Background
The
inventor is a DTTO Worker for the North Essex Mental Health Partnership Trust,
based at a Drug and Alcohol Centre. He became aware that there was no facility
in the waiting area for the safe disposal of either loose used needles and
syringes or small cassettes full of needles and syringes.
His design
had to encompass a non-retrievable and secure method of disposal to prevent
both needlestick injury and users from gaining access to the material for
re-use.
Commercialisation
Health
Enterprise East (HEE) has helped the inventor and his Trust to bring this
innovation to the market place. In addition, HEE are working closely with the
manufacturer on promoting the use of the cabinet in needle exchange programs
