Competition Overview

SBRI (Small Business Research Initiative) East is an innovation programme that has brought business, health, technology and government partners together to deliver a competition for small to medium sized enterprises to provide innovative solutions for identified healthcare problems.

To take forward the Dragons Den-style offer, in 2009 SBRI East secured funding of £3m from four key partners: NHS East of England, European Regional Development Fund, East of England Development Agency and the Technology Strategy Board. In 2011, a further SBRI East competition secured funding of £1m from three key partners: NHS East of England, European Regional Development Fund and the Technology Strategy Board. Background information plus competition winners from 2009 & 2011 can be found to the left of the page.

The programme aims to find solutions for identified and often intractable health service problems; it also promotes innovation and links across healthcare and business sectors. It has been successful in developing partnerships with regional economic agencies, businesses and the science and industry sector to evidence support for the regional economy during the recession.

Another objective of the programme is to use the power of public sector procurement to secure bespoke R&D and technology development that is specific to NHS needs.
