Sutureless Connector

new_picture_3.jpg - 4.98 Kb
A novel device to allow the connection of a graft to a blood vessel without the need for sutures.

Diseases of blood vessels, such as aortic aneurysms, may require a portion of the affected vessel to be replaced with a synthetic graft. Currently the vessel and graft are sutured together.

Innovation

The Sutureless Connector enables vessels and grafts to be quickly connected, without puncturing the vessel.

The Sutureless Connector (in green) is placed inside the blood vessel (red). The connector may be secured in place with tabs. The graft (grey) is then passed over the vessel and connector, and secured with a thread or cable tie. A prototype connector is also shown.

Key Advantages

· Significantly reduces the time taken to connect a synthetic graft when compared to suturing

· Remaining natural vessel is not perforated, reducing the risk of subsequent bleeding

· Time taken to perform the operation should be reduced, thereby reducing the risk to the patient

Market Size

The 2009 European market for aortic repair grafts is predicted to be approximately $40 million. It is predicted that about 215,000 wide-bore grafts will be sold globally in 2009.
