New Walking Frame Increases Mobility For Post-Operative Patients

An innovative design for a walking frame, created by a Senior Physiotherapist at Papworth Hospital, is set to give post-operative patients greater mobility.

The Papworth Pole has been devised by Onesmus Nyakotyo, with the help of Health Enterprise East (HEE), the regional NHS partner organisation for Innovation.

It incorporates a drip stand so that patients can move around independently without needing to be accompanied by a healthcare worker. The height-adjustable stand attaches to the frame and can also be used for other post-op items such as chest drains and pumps.

An exclusive licence to manufacture and market the Pole in Europe was recently signed by Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Safety Med Limited, specialist producers and suppliers of high quality stainless steel operating theatre equipment and accessories.

Onesmus Nyakotyo said: "One of the main aims for patients who have undergone surgery is to get them up and about as soon as possible to speed up rehabilitation. The Papworth Pole is easy to fit, secure and stable, designed to carry bags and pump without impeding movement and can also be used as a bedside/chair-side stand when the patient isn't mobile. It has also been designed for use with all hospital walking frames, whatever size."

HEE has worked with the inventor, assisting with the design and production of the concept for testing and refinement.

Robert Donald, Intellectual Property Manager HEE added: "The Papworth Pole is a perfect example of a simple idea put forward by a member of NHS staff which will transform the post-operative experience for patients. With less reliance on healthcare staff, it frees them up to carry out other duties and also improves patient dignity and independence.

"Now that the licence has been signed by Safety Med, the Pole will go into production and be available by August 2011."
